The Controversial Exhibit

To get to the area that contains the Lincoln's Living Legacy film, visitors must walk through the previously described Lincoln's Legacy exhibits. The film screens in a U-shaped exhibit room whose three walls contain captions to a variety of documentary photographs of marches and ceremonial events that have taken place at the memorial. The lighting in this particular room is lower than the others, and the grey walls provide better conditions for viewing the film and the backlit documentary photographs that are mounted above the thirty-one captions engraved in metal below.

This film was made by the NPS at their Harpers Ferry Interpretive Center (HFC) in 1994, and it continues to receive federal funding in order to run at the memorial. The film is eight minutes long, and it runs in a repeating loop in a television monitor on the wall opposite the entrance, above the documentary photographs and captions. There is no seating in this room, and to view the film, visitors have to stand and look up toward the ceiling. One consequence of this placement is that very few people stand in this uncomfortable position long enough to watch the entire film. There are no signs near the monitor with any information about the film, and there are no titles or screen credits at the beginning or end of the film.
